Louis Van Dyke: Pavane (1969)

A beautiful piano trio album for the late hours.
Jazzy easy listening with a classical touch and a good dab of Bill Evans could describe the way, Dutch pianist Van Dyke aproaches a popular repertoire of mostly contemporary pop and soundtrack tunes from Michel Legrand, Lennon/McCartney, Bacharach/David and the like.

Two jazz tunes, John Lewis' "Django" and the surprising choice of Blossom Dearie's "Sweet Georgie Fame", fit in seamlessly, as does Fauré's "Pavane" - not least due to the fluent, elegant, classically trained playing of the pianst.

This is an all-ballad programme with not too much improvisation, although all players were known for their jazz chops. Only on "Django" does Van Dyke stretch out a little more, showing that he can play the blues, too.

I've learned that Jacques Schols and John Engels are among Dutch's most admired jazz musicians and are still active today - as is Louis Van Dyke, who has played both classical music and jazz throughout his career.

If you like some perfect late-night, don't-annoy-me-with-your-avantgarde-noodling listening, you will enjoy this. Don't expect any heavy swinging stuff, though.

That is some understated stuff with a capitol "U". I'm sure it's probably a pretty rare one as well. Thanks LPR.

Hiddily-ho El Porco.

Glad to see you're taking another kick at the can...3rd time's a charm.

Love Pavane, so I'll explore this further.

Thx!

BTW, I noticed Yahoo pulled the chain on that dandy audio player I use at Jazzy's. I grabbed the code and host it on my weebly.com host - works fine now. (If interested, the discussion is here

Kris,
from what i know, it's at least vinyl-only and Dutch-only.
It's not pricey, though.

Orbyt,
nice to see you around.
Good to know about the player, very helpful to include a sample in a post, especially if there's nothing on youtube.
